Bathrooms and other high humidity rooms are challenging when it comes to flooring. We want something that is pretty, waterproof and warm to the toes. Ceramic tile is relatively inexpensive but boy is it cold. Ceramic flooring can also be damaged and shatter when something hard is dropped on it. Ceramic tile is also time consuming and messy to install. Some people like carpet in their bathrooms but I don’t recommend this at all because it is a mold factory! But there is something better available

If you have been in stores like The Home Depot lately you may have noticed a newer type of flooring that clicks into place . This is often called resilient flooring and it is a synthetic rubber feel to it. One of the more popular brands is from Trafficmaster and it is called Allure. This flooring will allow you to add the look of hardwood flooring to your bathroom, kitchen, basement or any high humidity room (or any other room for that matter). This flloring is inexpensive, easy to install and its waterproof. The Uniclic locking system that keeps floors safe and secure and it can even be installed over your existing flooring.

I picked up a sample of this and it made me break out in hives and my throat and eye lids swelled up, I had severe itching in my mouth, ears and throat and eyes. I put the sample away for awhile for the symptoms to calm and then rubbed it right on my face. I broke out right away with hives and my eye lids swelled again. DO NOT USE THIS FLOORING if you are sensitive to odors, chemicals or have allergies. I would not use it period. It is made in China, but what isn’t? I tried to leave a comment on Home Depots website saying that the sample gave me a severe allergic reaction. My comment was not approved for posting. Imagine that? Sounds like HD knows they have a problem but is trying to keep it hushed. I would also never install this around pets. They can’t talk of course, so you may not realize it is making them sick. I would stick to USA products, or real wood, tile, or stained concrete… more natural alternatives than this chemical stuff.
Wow Carmen that is unfortunate. Thank you for sharing it with our readers and I hope you are feeling better. Allergies are an odd thing. What bothers some may not bother others at all. And I agree that natural products are best in many cases, however natural products are getting more difficult to find and can be very expensive. Again, thank you for alerting our readers of possible allergy issues with this product.
I just installed Allure Ultra myself at my place with the help of friends. It’s FANTASTIC.
And I’m curious about the previous poster; are you sure you picked up a sample of the Allure Ultra? You may have had the Allure, which has a history of making people ill (http://ottoblotto.blogspot.com/2009/08/allure-flooring-stinks.html). The Allure Ultra has just a faint rubber smell that was pretty much faded completely in the four weeks since I installed it.
I actually smelled the sample Allure at two Home Depots near my house (the sticky strip Allure; it has a softer surface texture than the Allure Ultra click and lock planks) and I agree that there’s a pretty noticeable and unpleasant vinyl-chemical smell. Hence why I didn’t go with the Allure, but splurged on the Allure Ultra, which I also sniffed at the stores, but did not detect that noxious vinyl odor.
Please check out my detailed review and installation documentation of Allura Ultra in my home! It was actually a lot of fun, and I’m in love with my new floor. http://blind-hysteresis.blogspot.com/2012/03/reflooring-partay-uncarpeting-pizza-and.html

Thanks Vee for taking the time to tell us about your experience and educating our readers about difference between Allure and Allure Ultra.
My pleasure
I learned a lot about flooring from many people’s comments and posts on the internet while I was researching options and instructions, and am happy to share what I learned!
I’m reading the specs about this flooring and it implies that you can install it over bare concrete and below grade. I’m puzzled as to what happens to any moisture that comes up through the concrete. Doesn’t that need to breath to prevent a mold problem?
It looks like it can be installed below grade and on bare concrete. You would probably not want to install this on a concrete pad that was too fresh though. But that goes for any flooring. A dehumidifier in the basement can help dry your slab. Underlayment is also an option for this although I have never done it. Whatever you decide, you will want to bring the material into the home a few weeks prior to installation and allow it to acclimate to the environment.
I am thinking of having this flooring installed in my kitchen / den area… should I be worried about my dogs??? I want it to get rid of carpet and issues it causes with dog accidents etc… What is the best flooring for pet use?
Hello Laura. It would stand to reason that this flooring might be a good choice for you with your pets. Some type of ceramic tile or stone would probably be the absolute best for durability with pets, but Allure would also be a good choice and it is more comfortable on your feet.
